The Good, the Rad & the Gnarly~Summer 2011

The setting: Ryan, Mark & Don head east to ride one of their favorite wave spots on Lake Erie only to be hasseled by the Man. This is based on a true factual account (sort of)…….

Mark  & Ryan: sure looks like a good ol’ fun windy day, I think we’ll meet up with Don for some non destructive riding out east, those waves will be super nice

Don: hey, gee willikers its good to see you guys, oh-oh looks like security is coming our way!

Mark: no need to worry, I’ll just read him some bible quotes!

Tuco (the security guard): I’m looking for the owner of that TW edition Jeep. He’s tall, curly haired, he smokes a cigar, and he’s a pig!

Ryan: (pointing at Don) that’d be Don

Tuco: (to Don) I like big fat men like you. When they fall they make more noise. And sometimes they don’t get up.

Mark: ummm, sir, Don doesn’t fall as much as he used to!

Don: yeah, what he said! (hands the guard a note)

Tuco: [trying to read a note] “See you soon, id… ” “id… ” “ids… ”
Don: [taking the note] “Idiots”. It’s for you.
Mark:  hey, take it easy, He’s just trying to do his job!

Blondie   (the other guard to Ryan):  Put your drawers on, and take your gun off.

Ryan: I’d rather put my gun on and take off my drawers!

Mark: We just want to score some of those tasty waves sir, we mean no trouble.

Don: (starts to set up) dang, I got my lines all screwed up again!

Tuco: You never had a line around your neck. Well, I’m going to tell you something. When that line starts to pull tight, you can feel the Devil bite your ass.

Ryan: thats not the only thing thats bit his ass!

Mark: Calm down Ryan, that potty mouth of yours is gonna get you in big trouble!

Tuco: If you save your breath I feel a man like you can manage it. And if you don’t manage it, you’ll die. Only slowly, very slowly old friend.

Mark: die, he ain’t gonna die

Tuco: There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend: Those with a line around the neck, and the people who have the job of doing the filming.
Mark: well I ain’t filming & the line isn’t around his neck yet!

Ryan: All right, If you are marina security, where are your badges? Let’s see them

Security Guards: “Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned kiter and pink car driving fool!

Later that day after Ryan was arrested during his court appearance on the trumped up charges:

Judge:  wanted in    counties of this state…
…the condemned is found guilty of the crimes of murder, armed robbery…
…of citizens, state banks, and post offices…
…the theft of sacred objects, arson in a state prison…
…perjury, bigamy, deserting his wife and children…
              …inciting prostitution, kidnapping, extortion…
…receiving stolen goods, selling stolen goods…
…passing counterfeit money, and contrary to the laws of this state…
…the condemned is guilty of using…
Therefore, according to the powers vested in us…
…we sentence the accused here before us…
…Ryan Benedicto Pacifico Juan Owens Ramirez…
              …known as the “Rat”…
…and any other aliases he might have…
…to hang by the neck until dead.
May God have mercy on his soul. Proceed!

Mark & Don: boy thats harsh for just wanting to catch some crispy waves!”

Ryan: [shouting as hes drug out of the courthouse] Hey, Security! You know what you are? Just a dirty son-of-a-b-!

  1. I’m going to guess that by sunday, my day off, the water is gonna pretty much be gone from our end of the lake. With yard chores I’ll have no time for a trek east.

      1. Good out east also, but lonely. Several Clevelanders showed up as I was packing up. Apparently, not a secret anymore.

  2. to quote Ice Cube- “I got to say it was a good day (shit!)” and also “Today I didn’t even have to use my A.K.” Damn, Ice Cube you pretty much summed it up..

    1. saw mark launch one of the biggest jumps possible at that end of the lake…. and yes it was more than a “fin” out of the water….. prob 10-12ft….and yes on one of those windboard thingy’s ……

        1. Rainy, not too cold, lit up on 4-5 footers. Started 5.5 rerigged to 4.5 & it kept building. Me , Ryan L, Brad & Patrick braved the elements until 4pm.

  3. another good day at Mentor…7m….until my bladder busted….. then i used mark’s 6m …he 5m……i kited like shit….but …..oh well 2 more big days this week….i work each night….should be interesting

      1. heading to baypoint in marblehead if anyone wants in let me know. great on NE. putting me back on days thurs probably last chance for me this year.

        1. I’m stuck doing a quick hit & getting back to work for the afterschool shift….if I get motivated to ride in the rain

  4. Hey do you have video capabilities yet on the site. Just got a video from Don of the Cleveland crew at mentor

      1. the water looks to be moving out again,I’m going to pass on today (SW- WSW is going to be like Fri. when we all sat around looking at it) & shoot for Wed. out of the north in the cold rain! Gary was thinking of riding though.

        1. I have been all loaded and ready to roll to MBSP (or wherever) directly after work. Looking at the B(.)(.)Bies cam and my wind page, I’m thinking yet again… meh. Not worth getting wet.

          1. Wow, with the default font on this site, those are National Geographic boobies.

  5. No problem with low water at Catawba. Perfect spot. Light shore break and quicly into the ramps. Looks like the wind is back Mon. Hitting the water around 1 or 2 at the Super SS. Ryan B time to call in sick. Sorry windsurfers only. Trees then water

  6. This just in from Don on the Cleveland wind scene:” F@CK!!! Wayyyyyyyy over powered on 5m! 10yd ride and almost died! 2 peeps to hold me down! Waiting to see if it will let up some…. Never thought I would ever say that!”

      1. pegged down my 4 as much as I could, water was moving out quickly! It’ll be gone by tomorrow! Blowing big, Patrick on a 7, Mercedes guy(don’t know his name) & myself. That was a pretty fun gale to ride! Lt. 2 was showing gusts up to 46, I kinda agree…

        1. Don’t forget the guy on the really old 9m. He was still sitting there staring at the water when I left.

          1. he only counts if he put in……..with witnesses! That was Luke I believe, and that probably wasn’t gonna end well!

    1. hope to recon at 1 see what the scene is out there. The cams you can pull up our showing a lot of blown out water.

  7. looking SWish now, I am going to hold until it (hopefully) shifts to the W. In a perfect world I hope to leave work after lunch(12:30) & bust out a few hours & be done around 3 or 4. Sailflow showed the SW to W change over happening around 1-2.

          1. back already, way to off shore, gusty & too many holes….me, Ryan O & L & John left at the same time, Brad was still out on a 6.5 sail.

        1. it looks like its only gonna be me & the two most cool, slick, bad ass riders of all time, myself & I!

  8. Dear Wind Gods,
Ummmm… HELLO?! It’s October, already! It should be windy. Have you seen the forecast?
    http://www.ikitesurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=232&siteID=1868&Isection=Forecast+Graphs
Not even so much as a YELLOW day on the page. Really? This is what we get?

I left for two weeks in late September, typically a great time for wind, and you gave my wind-seeking lunatic friends NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH, BUMPKISS.

    WTF?

I may be done with praying to wind gods. Clearly they don’t listen.

    Pete

    1. I hear you brother, I have sailed less this year than any other!
No wind and toxic poo algae. Is it something we said?
Who got mama nature so mad?

    2. Its probably my fought. Working night with all my days off. No chance of wind now. At least the boat is still in water

  9. damn, it looks like 2 more days of big north winds. Rolling out once it warms up & I get some lunch in me. ETA around 1ish.

        1. Eventually, even the 13 wasn’t enough kite. I left at about 5:15 after a nice 13 session.

Back to back kite days makes me happy.

        2. Good out east. I was powered up on the 4.5 from 4 -6 Fri and 1 to 3:30 Sat. Got the GoPro footage to show the Marblehead swell. Give me a few days to send you a clip. That little camera has a great picture.

          1. Brad, Make sure you upload the video of you hitting the sandbar. And if you must show off, you can upload the vids of you catching some major air. Both are pretty good.

  10. showed up for the late shift, 4.5 stoked up & Ryan on 7……early & afternoon shift had called it by then. I do believe I am properly warmed up for tomorrow.

      1. just the luck, I have a gas leak at home-they are coming to fix at 9 AM tomorrow. I hope this doesn’t take too long!!!! I PLAN on being out around 1ish……PLAN that is.

  11. LP sheriff called breast bay marina and said that they found a kite board that washed up on the beach. Anyone down here missing a board? Might want to call the LP sheriff’s office or call breast bay marina and inquire who they need to get in touch with.

  12. Powered on a 14 at mbsp. Kinda cold. Think it is supposed to come down later so get it while you can

  13. Friday, I leave for Prague, Berlin and Vienna. I won’t be back until 9/30. Kite gear stays home 🙁

    Enjoy the wind.

    1. Sounds like a fun time, isn’t that code for Probed, Buggered & Violated? 😉 Do some buggering for me!

  14. Saturday 9/10 special, get a free issue of “The Kiteboarder Magazine” check put the brand new format, they just arrived today!

  15. day 4 of the toxic tour looks like it might be ending early! I sure don’t want to ride in anymore driving rain, we’ll see what the wind is doing once this rain clears up.

    1. hard to motivate to ride today after looking at the sensors, Lt. 2 is still showing wind but I can’t fire up to go give a look.

  16. early shift is done- John & myself lit up on 7 & 4.5. It was a miserable rainy day, the rain never stopped! Vic & Ryan were just starting the second shift as I was leaving.

  17. Another great day. Ran into Ryan L in Port Clinton. We are thinking East Harbor tomorrow Should be perfect there on a North or NE(and low toxins). Any other takers. Trying to get out of work around 2. Baypoint might be the call also

    1. I’m not a fan of the 3 way chaotic East Harbor swell. I’ll be MB or LP depending on the N NE factor.

          1. I’m sitting at MBSP watching Ryan play in the rain. I just can’t bring myself to pump up when it’s raining this hard.

Looks like it’s all on or all off by the way he’s working or getting worked.

  18. hope to make it out a little everyday over the next 3 days. Heading out today after lunch undecided either MB of LP depending on how much E there is.

        1. and done! Day 2 out of the possible 4 of my Toxic Erie ride-a-thon was nice. Ryan, Don, Judd, Traveler & AAC. Tomorrow looks to be even bigger. I did throw up & do feel a little itchy now!

          1. Unfortunately busy work week for me and not likely to make it out.
May be for the best, I prefer to kill my liver the old fashion way…..Alcohol.

      1. 5.5 for a bit, I bailed early to keep my exposure to the toxins to a minimum. I figure I’m gonna be exposed for the next 2 or 3 days so I didn’t want to wallow around more than I had to…..Pete, John, AA Chuck were in the AM group with & the Juddster showing up as a few of us were calling it.

        1. 13 kite for 90 minutes
          9 kite for 45 minutes
          13 kite for 45 minutes

          Called it when Mark did.

Not a bad day for a north, really.

Wednesday’s forecast has morphed into Wednesday (late) and all day Thursday. Pray that it his as predicted!

        2. Great 5.5 day at marblehead also. Looks like I tricked mother nature. Was suppose to be OBX this week.

          1. almost forgot, the best thing I saw all day was when Pete did the “River Dance” on the beach after he launched his kite, I forgot to tell him that was some funny sh!t! Yes, he did it on purpose, that was some crazy high knee action prancing all around the beach!

          2. I forgot all about that. The sales job starts on the beach, not in the water!

    1. You just had to rub it in! Looks like we are going to Duck in a couple weeks instead. don’t suppose there is any sailing sites near there? I know there is the one south of Jockey Ridge turn at a church. Any others?

      1. Been to Duck and Corolla several times and only rode oceanside or drove to Jockey’s Ridge. 12N sucks. Slow speeds and lotsa police (in season anyway) There were a couple of soundside spots that looked possible…would have had to ask permission to kite.

        Looks like public (boardwalk here)
