We’ll post here where we’ll be, what its looking like & the most important thing, ‘IF’ the wind is cooperating & we’re actually going to be able to ride. The 2016 spring water & wind season has begun

spr blogspr blog1spr blog2spr blog3

Here we go again, the high wind spring season is upon us. By now you should know the score, it’s going to blow 15 to 20 knots 3 days every week but it’s also going to be on the chilly side. You know this but a lot of you will ignore the good winds & wait for warmer air & water temps that will come when the wind starts dying out in June. As is always the case by the end of June you will start complaining how bad the spring was(even though you passed all the windy days because it was “too cold”.) The way to solve this is to buy a super warm wetsuit from your favorite shop, Red Sky. I’ll cut you a deal & we’ll order in a perfect suit just for you. It will be guaranteed to turn that cold frown upside down. Also there are killer closeout deals on kites & boards from Slingshot & also Ezzy and Aerotech sails. Let me know if you need anything & I’ll hook you up.

Mike Chamberlin~a pioneer passes in wind world

When I started getting into windsurfing waaay back when I didn’t see myself racing or putzing along(we call it schlogging now) as all the other windsurfers were doing, I saw myself terrorizing the water ways, riding waves & jumping everything in sight, there were not a lot of guys close to doing what I considered  “windsurfing” BUT 2 guys in the area seemed to have the same vision, they were the Chamberlin brothers. They seemed to be riding at a level light years ahead of all the others. They rode shorter boards than most, they did dumb stuff, they drank & carried on, they rode big wind, they chased the wind & they rode Lake Erie. Man I wanted to ride like that! Mike & Tom were really fun to ride with, I learned all I could from them watching there every move on the water, trying to emulate how they rode. If  I could just jibe like Tom I would be dangerous! Tom was more of the technician, Mike was…..well Mike. I remember riding at Crane Creek & Mike rams my board- board tag he called it- jumps on it & walks down to me as I holding the sail & pushes me off my board & sails away with it. I was pirated, how cool was that I thought to myself. They allowed my sorry sailing butt to ride with them, took the time to give me pointers & kicked my rear end out on the water.

Skip back in time for a little history~ Mike founded 1 of the 1st windsurfing groups in the US-the Blackswamp boardsailers. He did lessons & demos to get people into the sport & he did a lot of the selling & buying of windsurf gear when it was in its hey day at the Mountain Man shop. Mike was instrumental in the growth of windsurfing & water sports in this region. He was fun to ride with & a good guy. Mike died last January after a long battle with cancer. If you windsurf or kiteboard around Maumee Bay Mike probably had a influence on you that you probably aren’t even aware of be it water access or just the simple fact there is riding scene around here. Mike was very influential on my riding & as the years passed I took great pride in hearing Mike & Tom, my mentors, compliment my riding, pics & vids-basically all rooted in their riding-it’s what I learned from them & ran with. Mike Chamberlin- R.I.P.

There ain’t no cure for the summertime blues~ Kiteboarding & Windsurfing Lake Erie summer 2014

I’d hate to say I told you so……….but………… I told you so! I hope you got your wind fix in already because we’re in the summer wind doldrums. Its not that you can’t/won’t ride this summer its just now you’ll be lucky to put in once a week & that day might be a very marginal day. Those southwest winds that you avoided all spring are the norm right now, those 12 knot days that you were skipping a month ago are now the windy days.  But there are positives to be had in the summer. You might get lucky and score an afternoon thermal wind session from out of no where, the weekly parade of thunderstorms will give you an opportunity to score some wind before they roll in, as NOAA says: “wind & waves may be higher in & near thunderstorms” , the water is warm, the toxic algae hasn’t reared its ugly head yet, the E coli warnings have been infrequent & last but not least the beach scenery is a little more pleasant! Buy a big kite, buy a lightwind kiteboard, buy a big sail if you must, just don’t sit around doing nothing but complain, you were warned & you knew that the summer shut off was coming! Stop on in, we’ll hook you up with some lightwind gear because we feel for you & we care!
